Night spirits : the story of the relocation of the Sayisi Dene / Ila Bussidor and Ustun Bilgen-Reinart.
This book is the story of the Sayisi Dene of northern Manitoba. In their own words they describe how the Canadian government aburptly relocated them from their ancestral homelands, in Duck Lake, and left them to live in the slums on the outskirts of a frontier town, Churchill. The Sayisi Dene - "the People from the East" - offer a stark and brutally honest account of their near destruction as a people and their determination to reclaim their lives. Between 1956 and 1973, nearly one-third of the Sayisi Dene died violently, or as a result of their terrible living conditions. In 1973, they reasserted their independence and built a new community at Tadoule Lake.
